Fantasy Hockey: Peter Forsberg, Nathan MacKinnon, or Joe Sakic?
@nhlfantasy had a fun post asking which player you’d rather have on your Fantasy team in their prime: Peter Forsberg, Nathan MacKinnon, or Joe Sakic?
This chart shows the seasons when each of these players placed in the Top 10 among skaters for ESPN standard scoring format.
-Peter Forsberg (7, 7, 8): Forsberg won’t fair as well in leagues that give credit for shots on goal and value goals more than assists (typical for most leagues). He was a playmaker (never in top 10 for goals but 7 times for assists). Additionally, there is some injury risk when drafting him. Many people were probably excited to draft him for 2003-2004 after he won the Hart the previous season, only to watch him play only 39 games.
-Nathan MacKinnon (1 as of now, 1, 3, 4, 5, 6, 6): in addition to getting a lot of assists (5 seasons in top 10), he shoots a lot (8 seasons in top 10 and 3 seasons leading league), and scores a lot (5 seasons in top 10). He is also quite durable. This is about as good as it gets for a #1 Fantasy center and he figures to add a few more seasons to this list in his 30s.
-Joe Sakic (1, 3, 3, 4, 5, 6, 9): Very strong blend of scoring (5 seasons in top 10 for goals) and playmaking (9 seasons in top 10 for assists). He wasn’t a huge volume shooter in most seasons (just 2 in top 10). But this is super reliable value from a #1 Fantasy center. His 2006-2007 season when he was 37 even sneaks on here. He has a few more seasons on his resume that just missed this list.
